County votes 3-2 to levy Medicaid special assessment (September 29, 2021)

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, Medicaid enrollment has increased from 3.8 million to 4.6 million, and Medicaid enrollment is expected to increase, according to Florida TaxWatch, a Tallahassee nonprofit taxpayer research institute

While Biden billed the Made in America Tax Plan as a boost for U.S. workers, a Florida watchdog group sees a severe downside for taxpayers. Florida TaxWatch CEO Dominic Calabro, in an op-ed published by Florida Politics, labeled the plan as a “hurricane tax” and a financial threat to homeowners.

There’s justified debate over how governments use taxpayer-funded incentives to induce corporations to move into their communities, Florida TaxWatch maintains, but lawmakers erred by allowing a 26-year-old tax credit with “a proven track record” of generating high-wage jobs to expire July 1.

Florida TaxWatch Recommends Legislature Reauthorize Qualified Target Industry Tax Refund Program (September 24, 2021)

“It’s clear that QTI provides a significant benefit to Florida with its robust return-on-investment of more than five to one, creating thousands of high-paying jobs every year. In fact, in Fiscal Year 2019-2020 alone, 159 companies certified under the program created 7,890 jobs, and QTI generally produces jobs that pay more than 140 percent of the statewide average annual wage,”

House Ways & Means Lawmakers Urge CMS to Launch Palliative Benefit (September 23, 2021)

In addition to the benefits for patients and families, home-based palliative care could reduce societal health care costs by $103 billion nationwide within two decades, the nonprofit economic research group Florida TaxWatch reported in 2019.

Watchdog group rejects “corporate welfare” label for targeted industry tax refund program (September 23, 2021)

The program won the backing of Florida TaxWatch, which released the results of a study early Thursday calling on the lawmakers to bring the Qualified Target Industry (QTI) tax refund program back after it failed to win support from lawmakers in two previous sessions.

Dominic Calabro: ‘Hurricane tax’ — wrong idea at the wrong time for Florida homeowners (September 23, 2021)

Congress is set to impose a “hurricane tax” that would raise insurance premiums, particularly for climate-related catastrophes. The provision buried in the Joe Biden administration’s Made in America Tax Plan (MATP) would hike taxes on reinsurers and disproportionately affect Florida residents’ home and property insurance rates.

Tax watchdogs are sounding the alarm about a provision in President Joe Biden’s proposed tax plan that they’re calling a “hurricane tax.” “This would severely impact people with incomes substantially below $400,000 and be very much against the very foundation that President Biden said he wanted to enact,” said Calabro.
