Statement On Senate Bill Addressing Scope Of Practice For Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners And Physicians Assistants Which Would Improve Healthcare Outcomes And Costs

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Today, the Senate Appropriations committee approved Senate Bill 1250, marking a significant step for expanding scope of practice for advanced registered nurse practitioners (ARNPs) and physician assistants (PAs) in the state. Florida TaxWatch has long advocated for this common sense change to help Floridians save money and live healthier lives.

With only a few days left until the end of session, it is imperative that the Legislature considers SB 1250 along with HB 977, HB 375, HB 423, SB 676, HB 1241, SB 946, SB 152 and SB 748, all of which address scope of practice for ARNPs and PAs. Expanding scope of practice would benefit all Floridians and result in cost-savings for the state by providing lower healthcare costs while expanding healthcare access. Florida TaxWatch research found that ARNPs and PAs can provide many of the same services as a physician albeit quicker and more cost-effective.

“If Florida wants to continue to be the greatest state to live in the country, it must provide world-class, affordable healthcare services that are readily available for all citizens,” said Florida TaxWatch President and CEO Dominic M. Calabro. “Removing the barriers of practice for ARNPs and PAs is one of the many cost-effective ways that Florida can move its healthcare system into the 21st century and ensure that our residents are receiving the care they need.”
