Florida TaxWatch Statement on Record-Breaking Tourism Numbers

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -

Florida TaxWatch President and CEO Dominic M. Calabro released the following statement on the record-breaking 2016 tourism numbers announced by Governor Rick Scott earlier today:

“Today’s record-breaking tourism numbers are proof that Florida’s funding of marketing programs is working for the state. Nearly 113 million visitors came to the Sunshine State to attend our theme parks, spend time on the beach and enjoy numerous other attractions.

“Florida TaxWatch research has found that investment into the tourism industry is a boon for our state’s job market and growing economy. In fact, every 85 visitors to the state supports one job. The impact of our tourism industry goes beyond just beaches and roller coasters. It affects restaurants, retailers, health care and more.

“Continuous, targeted investment into our state’s tourism industry is critical to our state’s success. While diversifying our economy is definitely a goal we should all strive for, tourism will remain a key cog in growing our state. The Legislature must continue to fund tourism and move our state forward.”
