Florida TaxWatch Summarizes Roundtable Discussion with Distinguished K-12 Principals

Tallahassee, Fla. – Today, Florida TaxWatch released Principal Leadership Awards Roundtable Summary 2024. This report provides a summary of an April 2024 roundtable discussion with 12 distinguished principals who were recognized through the government watchdog’s 2023-24 Principal Leadership Awards, which is an annual program – established in 2013 and still unlike any other program in the country – that identifies and rewards principals who are creating meaningful change in their at-risk K-12 schools across the state.

Florida TaxWatch President and CEO Dominic M. Calabro said, “Placing the right leadership in Florida’s schools is critical to ensuring students are successful and have opportunities to become productive, self-sufficient, and well-informed adults. We must invest in and protect the future of our great state by prioritizing the role of principals, who we know have the second-most significant impact on student achievement, next to teachers, among school-related factors. This report and the conversations it details – which were facilitated as part of Florida TaxWatch’s one-of-a-kind Principal Leadership Awards Program – are intended to serve as a high-level resource for education policymakers and professionals as they undertake such important efforts in the months and years ahead.”

The roundtable participants discussed philosophies, strategies, challenges, and best practices of effective principals, including:

  • Attracting, developing, and retaining high-quality teachers;
  • Building a productive school culture;
  • Building relationships with stakeholders beyond the building; and
  • Managing time and personnel.
