Florida TaxWatch Releases Quarterly Report for Broward SMART Program

Tallahassee, Fla. – Today, Florida TaxWatch released its review of the Broward County School District's Safety, Music & Art, Athletics, Renovations and Technology (SMART) program in its report Monitoring and Oversight of General Obligation Bonds to Improve Broward County Schools: SMART Program Quarterly Report Review for the Quarter Ended March 31, 2023

The report will be presented by Florida TaxWatch’s Senior Vice President of Research Bob Nave at the quarterly Broward County Bond Oversight Committee meeting today, Thurs., June 15, at 5:30 p.m. Topics of discussion will include updates on the program’s progress and recommendations from Florida TaxWatch to support ongoing efforts.

Florida TaxWatch Senior Vice President of Research Bob Nave said, “As the 2022-23 school year comes to a close and students begin their summer break, Broward County Public Schools is well into its ninth year of the SMART Program. Improvements arestill underway, but this quarter, the most significant development was the adoption of a resolution that expresses the expectation for the program to be completed no later than October 31, 2025.

“Florida TaxWatch is encouraged by this new completion date, especially given the low numbers of Primary Renovations projects that are currently experiencing schedule delays and the fact that more than 40 Primary Renovations projects are ahead of schedule. We will remain dedicated to monitoring this progress and offering guidance to all responsible for ensuring the program’s success, while keeping taxpayers’ best interests top of mind.”
