Florida TaxWatch Applauds House for Passage of Proposed Supermajority Constitutional Amendment

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida TaxWatch President and CEO Dominic M. Calabro released the following statement regarding the House's passage of the proposed supermajority constitutional amendment –

“Florida TaxWatch applauds the House’s passage of a proposed constitutional amendment to require a supermajority vote to raise taxes and fees, a long-time recommendation of Florida TaxWatch dating back over two decades.  A well-crafted supermajority requirement is an important taxpayer safeguard.  It would ensure that a broad consensus is reached before Floridians are required to contribute more money to their state government. A thoughtful, non-draconian supermajority vote requirement can also help avoid a more severe tax or revenue limit that could overly constrain state government.  We hope to see the Senate get behind this amendment, and we encourage both chambers to continue their commitment to protecting Florida’s taxpayers.”

Florida TaxWatch was instrumental in the current state revenue limitation but has since called for a simpler supermajority requirement, as opposed to a revenue limitation based on personal income growth.
