Statement by Florida TaxWatch President and CEO Dominic M. Calabro on Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday Beginning Monday, July 25, 2022

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The statement below, to be attributed to Florida TaxWatch President and CEO Dominic M. Calabro, pertains to the Back-to-School sales tax holiday beginning Monday, July 25 and ending Sunday, August 7, 2022. “The annual Back-to-School sales tax holiday is a longstanding and effective form of financial relief for Floridians, always highly anticipated as their families begin to prepare for each new school year. In 2022, a year already defined by record and rampant inflation, Florida TaxWatch can certainly appreciate the savings this sales tax holiday will once again generate, but we are also hopeful that parents will view it as an opportunity to help their children – students of all ages – get excited about all they will learn and achieve in school, as we understand the positive impact a quality education can have on both personal success and the success of our communities and the state overall. With a new backpack and the necessary supplies in tow, we believe there is no stopping this next generation as they study and put in the work to become contributing members of society.”

According to Governor DeSantis’ Freedom First Budget Highlights, the $1.24 billion tax cut package in Florida’s Fiscal Year 2022-23 Budget contains funding for nine sales tax holidays and exemptions, including the two-week Back-to-School sales tax holiday, which is projected to save Floridians a total of $100 million.
